Fourth
grade continued their investigation into Art from Mexico by studying Oaxacan
Woodcarvings. These whimsical carvings originated in Oaxaca, Mexico
as toys when families couldn’t afford commercial ones. As they gained
popularity, families became mass producers of the art form. Usually the men
of the family did the carving with a machete and the women completed them
by painting brightly colored patterns.
Our fourth graders recreated the idea by morphing 3 animals into one to create
their fantasy creature. Sculptures were made of clay and color was added using
tempera paint.
