Fifth graders took on a project to permanently leave their mark on Goolsby Elementary School. Students worked in groups of 2 or 3 to recreate well known works of art on the ceiling tiles in the art room. Students decided as a group which artist and art piece they wanted to work on. Then, using a grid, they enlarged their drawing from an 8x10 sheet of paper to a 2x3 ft. tile. Tiles were then primed and painted. Students mixed all their own colors, sometimes spending half a class period just to get a color to match the original perfectly. They gained so much experience in drawing, perspective, color, blending and art appreciation in general. The final part of the assignment was to research their artist's life and art. You can see their research posted in the art room, along with a picture of the original pieces. They worked diligently on this project for about 4 months and I think it was completely worth the extended time. They by far blew away any expectations I had and I am so incredible proud of their completed images!
Stop in the art room to see them in person.
