First grade was introduced to Non-Objective art by observing the art of Sonia Delaunay. Non-Objective art is art that is not supposed to look like anything in particular. The artist simply uses lines, shapes and colors to create an interesting design. The students then compared this type of art to abstract and realistic and classified examples under the appropriate heading. Students discussed the primary colors (red, yellow and blue) and used them to make the secondary colors (orange, purple and green). The artists then created their own non-objective masterpieces using circles and lines. They did an amazing job painting with the bright tempera paint they mixed themselves.
