
First grade learned about two different types of artwork and then combined them into these colorful masterpieces. A still life is a group of objects sitting on a table, inside with no people in it. After discussing realistic still life paintings we compared and contrasted them to abstract works of art. First graders learned that abstract means that you can tell what it is but things don’t really look that way. So what would happen if we created an abstract still life? We imagined our bowl of fruit or vegetable being tossed up in the air and their painting was this action frozen in mid-air. Using oil pastels, they filled their food with a realistic color. Several colors of watercolor paint in the background completed the composition.
